On the Quick

Fly fishing in Alaska is a top destination for anglers from around the world. Yakutat, Alaska, is a cool spot at the end of the road. It is home to  the famous Situk River and several other well known rivers and creeks.  Each year fly anglers show up in the late summer for the Silver (Coho) salmon run.  These are bright silver fish, right off the ocean, that will eat a fly and test your 8 weight rod.  Don't miss out on this self guided adventure of a lifetime.

THE TRIP

Hard fighting fish!

Head out on an extraordinary adventure with Destinations Fly Fish, as we present an exceptional self-guided fly fishing trip targeting silver salmon (Coho) in the untamed beauty of Alaska's Yakutat Peninsula.

We like affordable adventures.  Thus, we have put together a package to include six nights of lodging and five and a half days of salmon fishing at a price that rivals just one day at many all-inclusive lodges in Alaska. Bonus...our package includes a one-day fly-out to some of the remote rivers in the area where seeing and catching big Silvers is likely.  Now add in the "wildlife" sightings, and this trip just keeps getting better!

This trip, unlike our others, is a "do-it-yourself" experience.  We take care of the logistics, and are on a quest to catch some great fish too.  Your trip host, Steve Berry, will be there throughout the trip.  We invite you to join him any day to see the area and fishing locations.  That said, if you know the hot spots, he will be right there with you too.  If you would like a guided option, let us know and we can arrange a guide for you.

The areas we fish are known for spawning silvers.  Places like the Situk and Lost Rivers, Tawah Creek, the bays surrounding Yakutat, and the Back Bay is right outside the door of your cabin.  Don't forget, we also  fly out to more remote waters.  There may also be an opportunity to add additional fly out days; just let us know your preference.

If you've always wanted to catch some great Salmon in Alaska, this might be the trip for you. Contact Destinations Fly Fish and join us for the affordable Alaskan fishing option.

Where we stay

The Lodge

Upon arrival at the lodge, your first instinct may be to put your gear away and grab your rods. Just steps away from the door, you'll find the "Back Bay," where rolling silvers will call your name, making you anxious to get your line in the water.

Leonard's Landing is a great home base for spending a week in Alaska.  With comfortable rooms and a full kitchen, the cabin is a nice place to refresh at the end of the day, and prepare for the next fishing day.  The main lodge has a large common room with a big screen television, if you wish to catch your favorite game. There is also Wi-Fi available, so you can keep up with home or other events going on in the world.  The office has a fairly well-stocked shopping area, should you wish to purchase a new sweatshirt or grab a soda.

With its own dock accessing the bay, if you are headed out on an open water trip, the boat can pick you up and drop you off right at the lodge.  Processing your catch is also a breeze, since Leonard's is known for their fish processing.  Simply drop off your daily catch (with your name attached) at the fish processing building, and it will be cut, vacuum packed and frozen for you to take home.

Recommended Fishing Gear for Yakutat, AK, Self-Guided Fishing:

Ensure you're well-prepared for your self-guided fishing adventure in Yakutat, Alaska, with the following recommended gear:

  • Fly Rods:
    • 8 to 10-weight fly rods – versatile rods suitable for targeting Silver Salmon (Coho) in various conditions.

  • Fly Lines:
    • Floating fly lines – ideal for the fishing conditions in Yakutat's waters.
    • Sink tip lines to match your setup.  At times, the water can be high, creating the need to get a fly deeper into the runs.

  • Flies:
    • Bring a selection of flies suitable for Silver Salmon (Coho).  The Cohos are rarely super selective,  so the standard pink, purple, orange etc. will usually get the job done.  We are happy to provide examples if needed.

  • Waders:
    • Waders – ensure you have reliable waders.  We spend most of our days in our waders.  The rivers have good footing and any wading boots will work.  Studded boots are not necessary.

  • Insulation Layers:
    • Layer appropriately, with insulation for varying weather conditions. Alaska's climate can change quickly, so be prepared for varying temperatures.

  • Rain Jacket:
    • Alaska is a rainforest.  A durable and waterproof rain jacket is essential for staying dry during potential rain showers.

  • Polarized Sunglasses:
    • Polarized sunglasses – enhance visibility in the water and protect your eyes from glare.

Since this is a self guided trip, feel free to tip yourself.  Maybe treat yourself to a new rod or waders?

We do collect a group tip at the end of the trip for the lodge staff.  They do a great job of keeping our place clean and well stocked.
