THE TRIP

Ladders and Lahontan

Pyramid Lake, situated near Reno, Nevada, is renowned for its unique fishing experience. This is the place  where anglers use ladders to land Lahontan Cutthroat Trout. Why ladders?  The ladders keep you elevated and out of the cold water, allowing you to make that cast out to the drop-offs where the fish are cruising.

Pyramid is a large, deep, and cold body of water.  This lake is the ideal habitat for Lahontan Cutthroat Trout, the largest Cutthroat Trout species in the world!  It's not uncommon to encounter these remarkable fish weighing anywhere from 10 to 20-pounds.  For most anglers, it may just be the biggest trout of a lifetime.  We always describe Pyramid as a unique, as it seems odd to chase these giant trout in a high desert lake in Nevada.

The morning view is usually pretty spectacular when the sun comes up on the lake.  If there is a litte chop on the water, hold on, because it could be a really good day.  After working the early morning bite, step up on the beach for some hot coffee and warm breakfast items. Just be ready to jump back in if the schools of fish come cruising through.  Fish until early afternoon when we take a break for a hot lunch on the beach.  After lunch, take your time and fish out the afternoon at your leisure.  At the end of the day, head back to nearby Sparks, Nevada, for lots of dinner options and prepare for another day on the water.

If you seek the best chance to catch a giant trout, to take in amazing scenery, and enjoy a trip of great value, then Pyramid lake trip is hard to beat.  Join Destinations and go after that fish of a lifetime.

Where we stay

The Nugget, Reno/Sparks, Nevada

Staying at the Nugget Hotel and Casino in Reno-Sparks, Nevada, is a great home-base for this trip. The hotel offers newly renovated rooms and plenty of space to spread out.  There are plenty of great dining options in the hotel and several others within a short walking distance from the hotel.

Each morning, we typically meet down stairs and caravan for the 30-40 minute drive out to the lake.  It's an easy drive and there are plenty of places to stop for that extra cup of coffee, if needed.

If you are still feeling lucky after you get back to the hotel, there are plenty of gaming options to keep you occupied.  Heck, if it's the right night, you might even catch a concert at the hotel! Remember when we called this trip unique?  There aren't many places where you can have this much diversity and fun, while on the hunt for a 15lb. trout.  Don't miss out... join Destinations for our giant trout hunting adventure.

Additional Options:

  • Individual rooms may be available. Contact us for more details on these alternatives.

              Transportation to Reno/Sparks, NV:

  • Some choose to fly and others choose to drive.  Reno is relatively easy to get to by either choice.

               Daily Ground Transportation:

  • You will want a vehicle to get back and forth from the hotel to the lake.  We recommend a four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicle, since many of the places we meet/fish are sandy beaches.  We are happy to try and pair you with another angler to share a vehicle, if you are interested.

               Pyramid Lake Fishing License:

  • Anglers are responsible for obtaining a Paiute Tribal fishing license.  They are easily purchased online:  https://plpt.nagfa.net/online/

               Dinners:

  • While breakfast, lunch, and snacks are provided, participants have the flexibility to explore local dining options in the area or make their own dinner arrangements.

              Ladders Provided:

  • As mentioned earlier, the use of ladders is a unique and essential aspect of fishing at Pyramid Lake. Providing ladders ensures that anglers can effectively position themselves above the water for better visibility and casting opportunities. Don't worry, the guides will have one set up for you when you arrive.

Platform Casting Chairs (Available Upon Request):

  • The availability of platform casting chairs, upon request, adds an extra level of comfort and customization to the fishing experience. Anglers who prefer or require casting from a stable platform can benefit from this option.

               Flies Provided:

  • The flies for this trip are provided by the guides.  Pyramid flies can be tricky at times. Since the guides are consistently on the water, they have the patterns with the best chance of hooking that big fish.

Fly Rods Available with Advance Request:

  • Don't have a rod to chase big trout? Don't worry! Our outfitter has rods ready for you to use. They provide quality equipment set up for fishing at Pyramid.  If you have questions about your own setup or about getting one, give us a call and we are happy to give you advice on putting together a Pyramid Lake combo.

Tipping?  This is probably our number one question. Tipping is definitely recommended and the standard is 10-20% of the cost of the trip.  Typically you would tip your guide at the end of each day.  If you are going the have the same guide for several days, you can arrange to tip them at the end.
