CASA CANGREJO, XCALAK MEXICO

Rustic Mexico Flats Fly Fishing

At the far southern tip of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula lies Xcalak, a quiet Caribbean outpost where saltwater fly fishing dreams come alive. Just north of the Belizian border, Xcalak offers pristine flats that stretch for miles—home to bonefish, permit, tarpon, and snook in classic Grand Slam fashion.

This remote village remains one of the last truly undeveloped stretches of the Mexican Caribbean, where anglers trade crowds for solitude and fish in the company of mangroves, coral flats, and turquoise water. Whether stalking tailing permit or cruising the back lagoons for baby tarpon, every cast in Xcalak brings a new adventure.

Destinations Fly Fish partners with trusted local guides and eco-lodges to provide a seamless, world-class experience in one of the most authentic saltwater fisheries on the planet.

Where we Stay

CASA CANGREJO, XCALAK MEXICO

Casa on the beach!

It might not get any better than this! Step out of your beachfront cabin at Casa Cangrejo Lodge and all you see is turquoise Caribbean water stretching to the horizon. It’s hard to imagine a more perfect setting for chasing permit, bonefish, and tarpon—or simply relaxing in one of the most peaceful corners of the Yucatán.

Did we mention that the entire property has been beautifully updated? Casa Cangrejo blends modern comfort with authentic, laid-back charm. You won’t find a better mix of world-class saltwater fly fishing and cozy island hospitality anywhere in Xcalak.

The Grounds

Tucked at the edge of the sea and surrounded by palms and mangroves, Casa Cangrejo feels like your own private hideaway. Everything here is steps from the flats—your skiff departs right from the dock each morning. After a full day on the water, settle into a hammock, grab a cold drink under the palapa, and let the sound of the surf remind you why you came.

The Cabins

The elevated seaside cabanas and guest suites are thoughtfully designed for anglers. Each is bright, airy, and equipped with comfortable queen beds, private baths, ceiling fans, and Wi-Fi. Most cabins open onto a spacious deck that overlooks the Caribbean—perfect for morning coffee, tying flies, or swapping stories after an epic day of fishing. It’s the perfect blend of comfort, privacy, and adventure.

The Lodge

At the heart of the property is the main Casa Cangrejo pavilion, where guests gather for fresh-caught seafood dinners and a few well-earned beverages at sunset. The vibe is relaxed, the service personal, and the friendships come easy. Between the great food, modern amenities, and world-class flats just outside your door, it’s everything a saltwater angler could ask for.

Tipping?  This is probably our number one question. Tipping is definitely recommended.  The  staff and guides do a great job at giving you the best experience possible. Typically, you would tip your guide at the end of each day.  If you are going to have the same guide for several days, you can arrange to tip them at the end of the trip.

Recommended tips:

  • Guides: $40-60 per angler per day or $80-120 per boat per day for singles.
  • Lodge staff: $100-150 per angler at the end of the trip.
